Class O Conundrum Continued

Two hours of CPD points are available. Presented by Ian Abley

Webinar Date: 15 February 2024

The Class O Conundrum; Class 0 was said to be the highest national performance classification for construction materials and products, such as in external walls, until the fatal fire of Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017. Despite a warning about the potential combustibility of Class 0 “cladding” products from the Select Committee to the Ministry publishing statutory guidance after Garnock Court fire on 11 June 1999.

Class 0 was defined in the statutory guidance of Approved Document Part B and not in any British Standard. When Grenfell Tower Inquiry finally reports by June 2024 it will be seven years since 72 deaths. That was an unnecessary and high price for British society to discover that Class 0 could in fact be achieved by composite products with highly combustible cores.

This webinar explains the Class 0 Conundrum using the evidence in a continuing process of disclosure, which led to Inquiry publication in 2022 of the Research on the Approved Document And Revision (RADAR) project, undertaken with construction industry partners in 2000.

Fire Safety Design Conference

Learning from Grenfell

Global Technical Services are headline sponsoring the Architect Journals’ Fire Safety Design Conference.

The Grenfell Tower fire and the subsequent (ongoing) public inquiry forced a major reassessment of how we design, monitor and deliver housing in the UK, and in particular, how we should approach the question of fire safety.

In response to this, The Architects’ Journal and AJ Specification launched the Fire Safety Design conference, where we united a community of over 1000 people in 2021 and 2022 to examine the lessons learned from the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, focusing on the implications for design, specification, and management within architectural practices.

The 2023 edition will delve deeper into the ongoing developments surrounding the inquiry, which has been instrumental in reshaping regulations and standards within the profession. We will explore the nature, scope, and progress of the inquiry thus far, speaking to practices about their lived experience of adapting to the changing standards, and shedding light on the significant reforms that lie ahead.

As the architectural community continues to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing fire safety standards, it is crucial for us to come together, share knowledge, and collaborate to shape a safer and more resilient built environment. Join us on 2 November 2023 to be at the forefront of the latest developments in fire safety design.

Presentation – STICCE with the planned Work Stages

12:30 pm – 12:50 pm

This presentation is an argument for thinking about fire safety through the RIBA Plan of Work 2020, even before an architect is appointed. Work Stage 0 is about strategic thinking by the investor in a building, who precedes the client, employer and the duty-holding owner or operator. In STICCE there is a memorable sequence of Strategy, Testing, Inspection, Certification, Compliance and Enforcement through to Work Stage 7. Strategy informs a plan.
