Global undertook passive fire protection works on a live student accommodation site in Newcastle. Taking a holistic approach, fire strategy review and AFD upgrade. Consisting of 6 student blocks in a given time frame of 12 months. Global was able to complete the work in a reduced timetable down to 9 months*, reducing the disruption any students received.

Byron Central has a timber structure with supplier design details. Throughout the block, the walls and parts of the stairwells were dismantled and put back. An overview of the work undertaken were, surveying, fire stopping, painting and decorating. The project employed workers from the local area and consisted of up to 42 people.

 Scope of Works

Multiple passive fire protection works were undertaken by Global. Global reinstated the integrity of the cluster walls by removing the sections of the ceiling and extending to the underside of the timber soffit. Throughout the corridor and lobby ceiling, existing ceiling was removed and a Firefly system was installed.

Plasterboard and wall lining was removed and installed 50mm FSI ablative batt in between existing studs, installed single layer of wall board, firestopping any penetrations from corridor to bedrooms and tape & joint/decorate upon completion of works. A head of wall detail was conducted, extending the wall boards to the existing studwork to the underside of the existing fire line soffit.

Wallboards were removed near the stair core and existing timber studwork was retained. Allowing Global to install double wallboards to both faces of stud to achieve the required 60 minute integrity.
