ABBE Understanding Fire Safety Design Qualification

Brand new for 2025, this qualification has been meticulously written and created by Global Academy in conjunction with experts at the Global HSE Group ensuring a comprehensive and effective learning experience.

The Understanding Fire Safety Design qualification will enable learners to demonstrate that they are capable and understand how to use fire safety to support their design processes.

They will gain the underpinning knowledge required and have to demonstrate the practical application of this knowledge in the design of buildings taking fire safety into account.

Understanding Fire Safety Design will be delivered by Chris Sharman Head of Technical and Training, alongside a skilled workforce who work across our passive fire and fire engineering divisions.

ABBE ACCREDITED

All of our qualifications are accredited by the Awarding Body of the Built Environment (ABBE) who are regulated by Ofqual.

The Understanding Fire Safety Design qualification is currently undergoing evaluation and accreditation by ABBE.

This qualification is appropriate for individuals working on construction projects either in a designer role such as Principal Designer or Specialist Designer, or within Principal, Main, or sub-contractors with a level of design liability where such knowledge may be essential to their role, such as:

  • Architects and Architectural Technicians
  • Design Managers and Product Managers
  • Specialist Designers
  • Quantity Surveyors and Specifiers
  • Fire Safety Managers and Senior Fire Risk Assessors
  • Site Inspectors and Building Control Officers

A demonstrable level of confidence using vocational related scenarios 

Setting the industry standard

The content of the qualification has been designed to ensure individuals receive all the underpinning knowledge required to then be able to apply it to the design process and covers areas including:

  • Testing and certification requirements for building design; and demonstrate understanding of fire safety within the design process
  • Fire science, fire development, and fire spread
  • Passive and active fire protection in buildings
  • Fire risk in the built environment
  • Fire safety management

Learn or refresh the basics about fire safety in your own time. Complete a pre-course portfolio which is submitted before the 3-day course.

4. Apply Knowledge and Certification

Partaking in a practical test, once completed gaining industry-recognised certification and becoming a suitably qualified experienced person in installing passive fire protection.

2. Input and Training

Understand how passive fire products work and how to implement them. Real-life examples, presentations and health and safety knowledge. 

3. Practical practice and experience

Get your hands dirty at our new training facility, where you will gain practical experience and feedback.

After completing the pre-learning material and passing the practical test, you will receive your results on the day. If you fail the practical, you can re-take the next day. 

Once achieving a pass you will receive an ABBE Award in Understanding Fire Safety Design certification to your registered address directly from ABBE.

Allow learners to demonstrate that they are capable of carrying out fire door inspections and have the under-pinning knowledge needed, at the required depth and to confirm occupational competence.
