Fire Safety Risks in External Wall Systems Across UK Buildings: Insulation, Compliance & Installation Failures
Across the UK, external wall systems remain one of the most misunderstood and highest-risk elements of a building.
Across residential, commercial, and high-rise buildings, we continue to see:
- Incorrectly specified insulation systems that fail to meet fire performance requirements
- Combustible materials where they shouldn’t be
- Poor installation compromising fire performance
- Gaps between design intent, product specification, and what is actually delievered on site
- Inadequate quality assurance and inspection during construction stages
If your external wall system is wrong, everything built on top of it is exposed. Fire performance, structural safety, long-term durability, and compliance all depend on getting this critical layer right from the outset.

What are External Wall Insulation Systems?
EWI is a high-performance façade system designed to improve both the thermal efficiency and fire safety of a building. It is mechanically fixed or adhesively bonded to the existing wall substrate and finished with a render, cladding, or ventilated façade system. This not only provides structural protection for the building but also enhances its aesthetic appeal.
When installed correctly, EWI integrates non-combustible insulation materials that help limit the spread of fire and smoke, making it a key component in a building’s overall fire safety.
Using ROCKWOOL A1 Stone Wool insulation, these solutions are engineered with 100% non-combustible substantial components, achieving the highest European fire classification in accordance with BS EN 13501-01(A1).

A different approach to External Wall Insulation
At Global HSE Group, we don’t approach External Wall Insulation as a standalone install. We approach it as part of a wider façade risk and compliance strategy.
As manufacturer-approved installers of ROCKWOOL systems, we combine:
- Façade engineering insight and assessment
- Correct system specification
- Compliant installation
- End-to-end remediation delivery
The objective isn’t just to install insulation. It’s to reduce risk, evidence compliance, and stand up to scrutiny. With a team of expert installers, we deliver compliant, high-performance façade solutions across residential, commercial and high-rise buildings.

A1 Rated EWI Systems – Why it matters?
An A1 fire rating is the highest fire safety classification a material or system can reach.
Key aspects of A1 rated EWI system:
- Non-combustibility
- No smoke produced
- No flaming droplets
- High temperature resistance (up to 1,000 degrees Celsius)
- 30-year minimum life expectancy
- Exceed the modern standards for safety, sustainability and compliance
- Where projects fall down is not just material choice – but how systems are specified, detailed, and installed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not only are they difficult to evacuate, high-rise buildings (typically over 18m in the UK) face greater risk of fire spread as flames and smoke can spread vertically via façades and cavities if combustible insulation is used. Therefore, it is crucial that non-combustible insulation materials (such a ROCKWOOL) are used to help limit the spread of fire and maintain compartmentation.
ROCKWOOL insulation is made from stone wool, which is non-combustible. This means it does not ignite, does not contribute to the spread of fire, and can with stand temaratures above 1000°C.
In a façade system, this helps prevent fire from spreading externally and supports the building’s overall fire strategy.
ROCKWOOL stone wool is made from volcanic rock and achieves an European Reaction to Fire Classification of A1 – non combustible. Stone wool is also a durable choice; its properties and benefits don’t reduce or change over time and the product will effectively perform for 50 or more years.
